7th Grade English
Ms. Dymek
Syllabus and Expectations
Materials
1. Students should have an English section in their binder or (preferably) a separate binder. It should be divided into warm-ups, grammar, class work, and homework.
2. Students should come prepared every day with loose-leaf paper, a writing utensil (pencil/pen—blue/black ink only), and any homework that is due.
3. Other materials, such as highlighters, post-it notes, white-out, and reinforcements, may be helpful, but are by no means necessary for this class.
Curriculum
We will be covering many exciting topics that will develop reading and writing skills, and we will engage in several units. As a class, we will also read novels, plays, poetry, and other literary works in order to analyze their themes and connections to our current society. Throughout the year, we will be covering grammar and the writing process, and several major writing assignments will be given, each with a detailed criteria and rubric. Please read the overview located on the back of this paper. If you have any objection or concerns in regards to any of these units, please let me know as soon as possible so other arrangements can be made for your child.
Absences
If a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain what they have missed. This may include worksheets, homework, tests/quizzes, etc. If the student has a prearranged absence (including field trips), the student should ask for work prior to their absence. In this case, the student should come prepared to the next class with the work that is missed completed.
Late Work
Class work and homework is due on the expected due date. Late work (class work/homework) will not be accepted for credit. During first quarter, work without a name will earn half credit. Starting 2nd quarter, work submitted without a name will also be marked as a zero and cannot be made up for credit. This policy is to help the students prepare for the future and to help them assume responsibility for their own work. This is a 7th grade English policy.
If a project or major paper is late, a letter grade will be taken off of the final grade for each day late (one day late=one letter grade off final grade, etc.). If assignments must be submitted in hard copy, those assignments need to be printed prior to the designated due date, and electronic submissions (such as emails, shared Google Docs, or copies on a flash drive) will not be accepted.
Grading Policy
Overall grades are based on the following scale:
89.5-100=A 79.5-89.4=B 69.5-79.4=C 59.5-69.4=D <59.4=E
To earn the grade listed, the student must be within the range stated. No exceptions.
The grades are weighted as follows:
Class work=40% Homework= 10% Tests/Quizzes= 25% Projects/Papers=25%
Warm ups are graded under the class work category. Warm ups are collected in sets at the end of every week. Students also need to make up any warm ups from absences unless given other instruction by me.
Tutorial
Help is always available to any student who asks, regardless of the assignment. I am usually available for help immediately after school, but please give me notice to avoid any scheduling conflicts.
Contact
If you or your child ever has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. The fastest way of contacting me is through email at [email protected], and I will do my best to respond in a timely manner.
